PRESENTATION OF BEARD TRANSPLANT

Beard transplantation is a surgical technique of hair implants aimed at correcting zero or limited density, creating a precise beard design or outline, or even repairing a scarred area of the face.

Beard transplantation involves implanting hair from the same person from a hairy area at the back of the head to an area lacking hair. This is an autograft, requiring no immunosuppressive or anti-rejection medication. Two harvesting techniques are possible: the FUE technique or the FUT technique.

PROCEDURE OF THE INTERVENTION

BEFORE THE INTERVENTION

Depending on the technique used, the donor area and/or the recipient area are first shaved. The doctor will then ensure that the patient is comfortably seated.

THE INTERVENTION

After rigorous asepsis and local anesthesia, the procedure can begin. The procedure is painless after local anesthesia of the treated areas. Sometimes, the introduction of anesthesia can cause relatively limited discomfort. The duration of the procedure may vary depending on the size and difficulty of the area to be treated.

AFTER BEARD TRANSPLANT

At the end of the procedure, the patient receives a post-operative kit to help the grafts take and the donor area heal. In all cases, the treatment and follow-up are always personalized.

THE AFTERMATH OF THE TRANSPLANT

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF BEARD TRANSPLANTATION?

Folliculitis : This is a localized skin infection, treated with local care and/or antibiotic therapy.
Epidermal cysts : they can appear on the grafted region or on the donor area. They often disappear spontaneously or with simple treatment.
Scars : micro-scars may be visible on the implanted facial skin, which would be hairless or shaved. The risk of hypertrophic or keloid scars is rare.
In case of FUT : widening of the scar, disturbances of scalp sensitivity (often transient).

POST-OPERATIVE CARE

At the end of the procedure, the operating instructions are given and a dressing can be applied to the donor area. The main post-operative effects consist of:

facial edema which may be visible (within 24 to 48 hours) then resolves within a few days
small scabs in the donor and recipient areas (disappear within 7 to 10 days)
mild to moderate redness in the implanted area, which then returns to normal within a few weeks
a phenomenon of “shedding” (falling of the implanted hair shaft), classic in the first trimester. Then, the grafts grow and become denser over the months.

Furthermore, the grafts must remain clean and well protected from any traction or tearing during the first week.
