I'M LOSING MY HAIR WHAT CAN I DO?

The Croix d'Or Hair Clinic has grouped together for its patients and the general public the main questions that a patient may ask concerning a hair problem, and in particular hair implants.
The first step is the consultation in our premises or via our online questionnaire (with the sending of photos according to our protocol). A doctor from our team will answer you as soon as possible (within 24 to 48 hours maximum).

WHAT IS HAIR TRANSPLANTATION?

The principle consists of taking hair from the back and sides of the skull, those which are programmed to theoretically last a lifetime, and replanting them in the bald or thinning areas. The grafted hair will behave exactly as if it had remained in the donor area and will grow and develop normally.

WHAT IS FUE?

This is a hair harvesting technique, where the grafts (or follicular units) are extracted one by one (Follicular Unit Extraction). This technique is mostly performed on shaved hair, although for small quantities of hair it is possible on long hair.

WHAT IS FUT?

This is a hair harvesting technique, where the grafts (or follicular units) are extracted with a strip of scalp (Follicular Unit Transplantation). It is also called FUSS (Follicular Unit by Strip Surgery).

HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A HAIR TRANSPLANT?

Clinical evaluation by a doctor is essential. Due to several parameters such as age, stage of baldness, characteristics of the hair, etc., the doctor will be able to offer you an optimal treatment plan.

HOW MUCH HAIR DO I NEED?

A hair transplant can involve 500 to 4000 grafts (or more) depending on the indication. This surgical treatment can be done over several days if necessary. Consultation and medical advice are essential.

WILL I HAVE A SCAR?

It all depends on the technique used. The principle of hair implantology is based on taking hair from an area (Hippocratic crown) that does not fall towards a bald area. With the FUT method, there will be a linear scar that is barely visible thanks to the trichophytic suture technique. With the FUE method, the samples are taken graft by graft, with microsurgery tools leaving sub-millimeter traces.

HOW LONG DOES AN INTERVENTION LAST?

On average, it takes 3 to 8 hours depending on the type of procedure.

IS HAIR TRANSPLANTATION PAINFUL?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, with constant pain control. Once the anesthesia is achieved, the patient no longer feels anything. Postoperatively, pain is rare and, if necessary, is simply relieved by paracetamol.

RISK OF REJECTION

Hair transplantation is an autograft. There is no risk of rejection in this configuration. Hair transplantation is impossible with hair from a third person. The implantation of artificial hair is not indicated at the moment.

DO I NEED RECOVERY AFTER HAIR TRANSPLANT?

In FUT, it is estimated that 10 to 15 days are necessary to recover properly. In FUE, it is a procedure allowing a faster return to activity. It is advisable to take at least 3 to 7 days of rest post-operatively.

WHAT ARE THE STEPS FOLLOWING A HAIR TRANSPLANT?

Once done, simple local care should be carried out for 7 to 10 days on the treated areas in order to keep them clean and for the small scabs to fall off. After a few weeks (from 1 to 6 weeks post-graft), it is common for the grafted hair to fall out, this is completely normal: this is called "shedding". Some patients (a minority) will not have this shedding phase and the hair will grow back immediately. In either case, this has no impact on the final result. The grafts are anchored to the skin and significant regrowth is observed from the fourth month (the hair is fine, then will become denser). The final result of a hair transplant is assessed at 9-12 months post-op. We are attentive to our patients and remain available for any information at each stage of the process.

WHAT IS SHOCK LOSS?

In some transplant patients, post-operative hair effluvium or hair loss is observed concerning native hair (not grafted) on the donor area and/or the recipient area. It generally appears in the weeks following the operation and can last a few weeks. This phenomenon is always transient and has no impact on the final result.

HOW MUCH MINIMUM TIME BETWEEN TWO INTERVENTIONS?

In some cases, the interventions are carried out in stages over time (large bald areas for example). Also, a variable period of around 8 to 24 months must be respected depending on the patient.

ARE THERE ANY MEDICATIONS TO AVOID BEFORE THE PROCEDURE?

Yes. Talk to the doctor about it during the consultation.

WHAT IS PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP)?

PRP is a type of complementary medical treatment aimed at stimulating the scalp and inducing hair regrowth. It is a treatment based on the patient's blood (simple venous collection) which has been centrifuged and prepared. PRP can be useful in supporting a hair transplant by injections in the first months following the procedure.

WHAT IS MESOTHERAPY?

This is a superficial injection of the scalp with the aim of directly providing the follicle with the micronutrients and antioxidants necessary to induce regrowth and stimulation. Hair mesotherapy is a method of choice in the daily practice of a specialized service such as that of the Clinique de la Croix d'Or.

WHAT IS PHOTOBIOMODULATION?

This technique is used alone or in addition to injections (mesotherapy, PRP). It will make the hair thicker and denser, and potentiate the results obtained by the injections. It consists of the application of a specific low-energy light in the immediate vicinity of the scalp.

HOW TO SUPPORT HAIR TRANSPLANT?

It is possible to take the usual medications such as finasteride and minoxidil postoperatively – Preoperatively: Stop taking minoxidil 24 hours before the procedureContinue taking finasteride – Postoperatively: Restart taking minoxidil depending on the condition of the scalpContinue taking finasteride

CAN WE LEAVE IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE OPERATION?

For safety and caution, we recommend a 1-hour period of surveillance before returning home. The return should ideally be accompanied by a third party.

IS THERE A RIGHT TIME TO GET A TRANSPLANT?

In practice, hair transplants take place all year round. It is imperative to organize and plan this procedure in order to optimize local post-operative care. You will simply need to ensure that the grafted area is well protected from the sun during the first trimester following the procedure (wearing a cap will suffice after the first 15 days).

WHAT CAN BE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF HAIR TRANSPLANTATION?

  • Folliculitis: This is a localized skin infection, treated with local care and/or antibiotic therapy.
  • Epidermal cysts: they can appear on the grafted region or on the donor area. They often disappear spontaneously or with simple treatment.
  • Scars: Micro-scars may be visible on the implanted facial skin, which would be hairless or shaved. The risk of hypertrophic or keloid scars is rare.
  • In case of FUT: widening of the scar, disturbances of scalp sensitivity (often transient).

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

As each intervention is different, we invite you to discover our prices page to give you an idea.
In fact, the prices presented are indicative given the working time carried out which may vary depending on the anatomy of the patients. The estimate made by the doctor after clinical examination will be precise.
